Carp Fishing in France

Archived News Issue 5

Newsletter 5 - Spring 2014

Hello to all,

We have thankfully come to the end of a truly wet, windy and horrible winter!  The horrors of high winds, flooding, fallen trees and loss of energy supplies in the UK have been very well reported in the news, what they don't tend to say is that Western France gets it about a day before the UK!!  Redmill has stood up well to the torrential rain, high winds and general weather battering magnificently, although we have had one or two tree casualties. Although the weather was awful it has also been quite mild and the fish have eaten over twice the amount they did last winter, and we have some new arrivals who are proving to pile on the pounds already.

Winter Stocking 2013

Having evaluated our stocks from the catch reports during 2013, we decided that we just need to trickle a few larger, hand-picked fish into the lake to compliment the head of fish we already have.  We contacted the renowned and respected fishery who has stocked all the fish at Redmill since the lakes conception, and so my good friend and
fish expert Mark and I went shopping!!  We hand picked six carp, one Mirrorr of 40lb, four Mirrors of 35lb and the 40lb Common pictured above, all of them stunning fish. We also stocked four more Grass Carp between 20-22lb, and removed half a ton of small Catfish to control their numbers.

Winter Progress

The weather has obviously had an effect on our progress this winter, most importantly the new toilet and shower block has been delayed as the new sceptic tank can not be installed until the water table drops. However the Mill House is still open with all the facilities.
The lodge in the Poplar Grove is up and running with its new slate roof, the bait freezers are in place, and the landscaping is complete with the BBQ ready to be fired up!  The view from here over the lake is absolutely stunning.
Unfortunately we fell behind schedule with the de-silting and we are now planning on completing this winter 2014.
The work already done has made a huge difference in the shallows but with the amount of rain we had over the winter it appears more silt has washed in.  It looks like if we want to keep on top of it this could end up being an annual thing!.
We have started the extension to the Mill House, and when complete will offer wonderful accommodation for families as well as B&B accommodation for anyone wanting to arrive a day or two prior to, or a couple of days after their booking. We already have bookings for next year and details for renting the Mill House will appear on the website soon.

The New 2014 Season

We are now into the new season and the first few anglers have already showed the potential for this year. Friends Matt (Chippie) and Steve (Builder) fished nights only the first week of March as they were busy working on the Mill house during the day. Matt had 5 x 30's and 2 x 40's with an average
weight of 37lb.  Steve had a PB 38lb mirror. Mid March saw Jeff and Garry Taylor return and with fish of 47lb and 48lb the average weight remained high.  Then returning angler Mark Quimby came up with a 54lb (above) keeping the trend. I had a couple of nights on the bank the last week of March and managed a Mirror of 36lb and a 73lb catfish.
New Redmill Bait

New Redmill Bait

We have also added a new bait for 2014. Along with our fishmeal based Redmill boillie we now have a milk protein based boillie. We also have boillies in 14mm as well as the 16mm and 18mm. The bait is available to pre-order on the Redmill website shop.  There is discount for all orders over 10kg (of each product) so please give me a call before you order. The bait we sell is of a very high quality and a good food source for our fish, therefore I am happy to supply the bait at reasonable prices to make sure the fish receive high quality feed.  We also have a limited stock of all the essential tackle that you may need just incase you run out while you are here.

Looking Forward To This Year

Things are looking good for the season and the lake is getting booked up very quickly for 2015. We have had to raise the tariffs for next year due to the improvements and stocking programmes we have under gone. However any bookings made before end of June 2014 for 2015 will be held at 2014 prices.  Yvonne and I are looking forward to the coming season and we are pleased to see so many friends returning to Redmill.  Don't forget the house is open to everyone as the social side of your stay here is as important to us as the fishing.

And Finally

Keep an eye on the website as we have some exciting plans for the future including the possibility of a new venue
(more details in the next news letter). We are updating the catch reports weekly, and the photo gallery as soon as we get the pictures through, and the latest availability is always on line.
We look forward to seeing you soon
